The critical traffic congestion issues during busy times are emerging like serious traffic management problems on many Motorways & Strategic Road Networks(MSRN) around the country. The extent of its severity with many more complexities is expected to increase many folds unless timely effective measures are taken to properly address traffic congestion issues of certain problematic MSRN. As a motorway reaches to its more than 80% capacity, small changes in speed can ripple across the whole system due to minimal capacity to absorb the shock. But on the other hand, most of the times environmental impacts & financial constraints usually make conventional widening and construction of extra new lanes or hard shoulders much less appropriate and even time consuming as well.

Thus in order to overcome such limitations and constrains, Smart Motorway becomes the ultimate solution of Multi Lane Free Flow Traffic (MLFF) and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for seamless travel through toll plazas and complete journey time reliability. As a matter of fact, main reason for implementing a smart motorway solution is to enhance the capacity of the motorway to indigenously squeeze an extra 30% capacity into a problematic motorway quite safely, economically and without impacting significantly on the environment. So an Intelligently Managed Motorway (IMM) concept can deliver much more benefits to conventional widening with reduced cost and in a more sustainable way.
